Problem

The BlackBerry device user is unable to delete email messages from the BlackBerry device using the Delete or Delete Prior menu options. When attempting to do so, one of the following error messages may be received:

You are unable to delete messages using the Delete Prior menu item.

OR

You are unable to delete messages using the Delete or Delete Prior menu item.
Cause

The Messages database on the BlackBerry device is corrupt and must be cleared.
Resolution
Clear the Messages database using the backup and restore tool in BlackBerry® Desktop Manager. For instructions, see KB10167.

Note: When attempting to clear the Messages database, if you receive the message Unable to clear database. Unrecognised data, complete the following steps:

1. Back up the BlackBerry device. For instructions, see KB11625.
2. Delete all the data on the BlackBerry device. For instructions, see KB02318.
3. Restore the data from the backup file. For instructions, see KB10339.
